1. Place a small amount of ink on the block.
2. Use the roller to spread the ink out and to cover the roller evenly.
3. Start to apply ink to the hand.
4. Apply ink to hand.
5. Be sure to apply ink to all surfaces that will contact paper.
6. Place hand on paper.
7. Press gently and firmly.
8. Lift hand from paper.
9. Generally the first copy has too much ink and it is discarded. Evaluate how the hand is making contact and notice if any hollows are evident.
The missing uninked areas are significant to the reading, as pointed out earlier. However, the lines in the missing areas are also significant. Therefore you will need to print them by making another print in a special way as shown in the next step below. Use both print copies for the analysis; one with the hollows and one with the lines.
10. If there was a major hollow in the palm and you want to print the lines there, do this:
Press the hand on to another piece of clean paper (do not add more ink). If a hollow in the palm area did not print the firsttime, lift the hand and paper and press gently from below to copy the lines in the hollow.
11. The second copy should be satisfactory. If not, try again. Usually three copies can be made before adding more ink.
And a final reminder: Have water and a towel immediately available to wash the hands after the ink prints are made!
